Traveling Rome in Georgia

My favorite Rome is in the great state of Georgia. I haven’t made it to Rome, Italy, but I hear it’s pretty old, so I’ll stick with my trendy North Georgia getaway.
I am a travel show host on Georgia’s PBS station, so you will find my stories quite restricted to the Peach State, but I can promise you that there are an endless amount of destinations to eat, drink, sleep, swim, noodle for catfish, and fish for brim.
So let me explain Rome for those of you who haven’t been there, or maybe even haven’t cared to be there. For starters, about one-third of the downtown area these days is underground. This wasn’t intentional in the design. There was a flood in the late 1800’s that swept through this little town in the hills…(If General Sherman’s fires were still burning, this water would have come in handy, unfortunately, Mother Nature was a few decades late in helping out). When you go into some of the old buildings like The Harvest Moon Cafe, you can see the marks in the brickwork about three feet high that show where a roof used to be…And speaking of the Harvest Moon Cafe, you have got to try their Pimento Cheese Burger!
I am not the main food expert on my travel show, but it doesn’t mean I can’t inhale a good cow burger. For you vegetarians, they also have lettuce(On the Burger) However, this restaurant is more than a burger joint. It has a great nightlife, and a trendy urban feel which appeals to all ages.
After filling up on the burger or lettuce, you may want to catch the Rome Braves in action. This beautiful stadium is actually a replica of Turner field in downtown Atlanta but about one-third the size.
Last little Rome tidbit for you is a little known fact about Berry College. If you live outside of Georgia, you may never have heard of it, but if you come to Rome, you can’t miss it. That’s because it is the largest college campus in the United States. Oh, and I am told there is room to grow even larger. So if you are that college student who doesn’t want to keep running into the same person over and over again, you have no excuse…unless of course you go to class.
I do hope this article and future travel journals are both informative and entertaining, and unlike a 90’s Kevin Costner movie, not too long. Stay tuned for more about The Empire State of the South
