The Mysterious Mists Around Mount Waialeale
by James Chapman on 20/02/09 at 9:46 am
There have been many tales of unsuspecting people just disappearing when these mysterious mists drift over them. And the walkers on the mountain have talked of the fear that they feel when the path beneath them is shrouded by the mists and there is a chill in the air.
Kauai Island is the fourth largest island of the six volcanically formed islands of Hawaii. It is the remotest place on earth, being further away from any mainland, than anywhere else on our planet.
Rising high on the island is the mountain of Waialeale, which receives the most rainfall of any place on earth. Seven rivers run from Waialeale and provide the reason why Kauai Island is called the Garden of Eden.
Visitors to Kauai Island are always amazed at just how green and lush the vegetation is and how romantic the coastline and beaches are.
Kauai Island is famous for the number of newlyweds that decide every year to get married on the island, it also seems to attract the Hollywood film producers, with films, such as South Pacific, Blue Hawaii and many others that have been made there.
The mountain of Waialeale is generally shrouded in mysterious mists that suddenly appear, as if, from nowhere. There are seldom many days when the mountain is totally clear of these mists.
But when it is, the mountain attracts many visitors, some come to enjoy a picnic, although most of the visitors are walkers, that is because the mountain of Waialeale is encircled by an intrinsic set of paths that wind here, there, up and down throughout the mountain.
Walkers have told countless numbers of stories about the mysterious mists around mount Waialeale, where totally without any warning the mists drift in, blocking out visibility and creating a chill in the air.
Many walkers have related tales of seeing their party members only a few paces in front of them, then suddenly the mist seems to consume them and when the mist has passed, which maybe only seconds, their party members are nowhere to be seen.
Looking down from the mountain, one moment the air is totally clear and the ground detail can be easily seen, the next moment mysterious mists start to rise up the sides of the mountain, just like eerie fingers reaching up to try and capture any unsuspecting walker.
The paths that the walkers proceed along around the mount of Waialeale are very narrow, so any loss of visibility can be very dangerous in terms of their safety, but amazingly no one has come to any harm.
Lots of walkers say that when the mysterious mists drift over the narrow paths that they are walking on, they are never sure if they are walking on firm ground or that the mists are somehow supporting their feet.
Kauai Island is a wondrous place and the mysterious mists, which drift around mount Waialeale, only adds to that feeling of wonderment. Kauai Island truly is very spectacular, with its really incredible waterfalls and its breathtaking scenery.
Therefore, it should not come as a surprise to anyone, to learn that the island of Kauai was chosen by Steven Spielberg for the filming of the location shots in Jurassic Park.
