A short paper about O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, IL.
O’Hare International Airport extremely impacted the Chicago and all of the suburbs surrounding it. It made such an enormous impact on the area providing many things for the area and its suburbs. There have been many jobs provided by it to people all over the area. It has also had a great impact on tourism. It has allowed easy transportation for tourists to come to the area. It also impacted the population the same way it impacted tourism. It allowed for people to get to the area and grow. Overall O’Hare Airport was a way for the population to grow, it provided jobs for many people, and it allowed more tourism. O’Hare has impacted the suburbs around it greatly by allowing for the population to grow in them and for the areas to develop more.
O’Hare airport was once called Orchard Field was located at the Douglas aircraft assembly plant when it first started in 1945. Lights were first added to the first four runways in 1946. In 1949 the Chicago City Council renamed Orchard Fields to O’Hare International Airport. They did that to honor the naval aviator Lt. Commander Edward H. He had died in World War two as a Medal of Honor recipient.
Temporary runway lights were added in 1946. O’Hare airport first opened to commercial air traffic in 1955. A terminal dedicated to international traffic was added in August 8, 1958. In April of 1959 O’Hare airport had an expansion of its size. It was now seven thousand acres. The expansion included an additional terminal, cargo buildings, airplane hangers, automotive parking, a post office, flight kitchens, and car rental facilities.
A hotel was later added next to the airport. This was nice because people were able to get to the hotels lobby without even having to go outside. That was added in 1973. Then a six level parking garage was added to accommodate for all of the cars needing a place to park in 1974. That brought O’Hare airport’s car parking spots to nine thousand and three hundred cars.
President John F. Kennedy dedicated O’Hare Airport on March 23, 1963. John F. Kennedy said, “There is no other airport in the world which serves so many people and so many airplanes. This is an extraordinary airport, an extraordinary city, and an extraordinary country, and it could be classed as one of the wonders of the modern world.”
The airlines at O’Hare airport include American, Air France, BOAC, Braniff, Capitol, Delta Easter, Flying Tigers, Ozark, Pan America, Trans Canada, TWA, and United as of 1956. American Airlines finished its reconstruction of Terminal three in 1990.
In 1983 O’Hare airport had two billion dollars funded toward creating a solution to crowded terminals at the airport. The housing for Delta Airlines was added to terminal three with the two billion dollars that were funded The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) extended its blue line train was extended to O’Hare airport to provide easy, low-cost, and fast transportation to and from the city as well as too and from the airport in 1984. This was very important to travel. It gave people a way to travel in and out of the city.
O’Hare airport had its seventh runway added in 1971. The longest runway measures two and a half miles. A fifth runway was added to O’Hare airport in 1957. A sixth runway was added to O’Hare airport in 1968. The airport state-of-the-art terminal was added to the airport at a cost of half a million dollars. That is a good example right there on how O’Hare attracted tourists but at the same time provided transportation for them so they can see other tourist attractions in the area.
O’Hare airport had a great impact on tourism. It allowed for many people to get to the Chicago area. Many people were able to travel to the area. That led to the growth of the population. Terminal 5 was added in 1993. Currently O’Hare airport provides thirty seven billion dollars in economic development.
The population steadily grew over time. In 1955 the airport served 176,902 passengers. In 1973 it surpassed the second busiest airport in the world by twelve million. It then broke the thirty million-passenger marks in 1968, forty million passengers in 1976, sixty million passengers in 1990, seventy million passengers in 1997, and over seventy six million passengers in 2005. The amount of passengers just kept on growing as time went by. This shows how there was a great impact on the amount of people coming to the area, which had a sure impact on the population.
The population was greatly affected by the airport moving in. New towns were created near the airport due to the airport being put in. The United States population was about two hundred forty eight million people in 1990, about two hundred eighty one million in 2000, and in 2008 it was about three hundred four million people living in the United States.
O’Hare airport provides mail transportation for all of the area. It allows for the postal service to transport the mail to and from far away places around the world. O’Hare airport processes more than one and a half million tons of freight every year. The airport also provides around five hundred seventeen jobs for people all around the nation.
O’Hare airport has grown greatly. It used to be a small plane assembly plant called the Douglas aircraft assembly plant in 1945. Then it grew into a small airport with only four runways called Orchard Field. Then finally it developed into O’Hare International Airport. Over that time other airports were developed around the world following O’Hare airports ideas. This made O’Hare airport a type of model for other airports to follow. The airport has helped the Chicago area grow it made in impact on tourism by allowing an easy was for people to get to the area and visit. It also provided many jobs for people. The installment of O’Hare International Airport also helped the areas surrounding the airport grow and develop greatly. The population around the airport was greatly impacted. The airport also was an example for other airport to follow, giving them ideas about security and how to operate an airport and thing like that. O’Hare International Airport not only impacted the Chicago area but it also impacted airports around the world. Overall O’Hare airport had an impact on tourism, population, and it provided many jobs.
