Shedd Aquarium

When it comes to aquariums, the Shedd Aquarium, named after John G. Shedd, is one of the best. It is located on the gorgeous Lake Michigan in Chicago, and near many other great museums which makes it a great place for a weekend visit.
I love the Shedd Aquarium. Uh, I must admit I like aquariums in general, so bear with me. However, the Shedd Aquarium is really one of the best.
For starters, the sheer amount of different kinds of fish and other cool creatures is incredible. There are many, many tanks lining the halls, each with beautiful and ugly sea, river, and lake animals. In the middle of the building is a huge 90,000 gallon, round tank stuffed with interesting things to cry “ooooh” over, and, if you are there at the right time of day, a diver will give a presentation from the tank. This exhibit is called the Caribbean Reef, and is one of my favorite things to watch at the Shedd. There are other exhibits, too, like the darling sea otters, and the hilarious penguins.
One of the best loved features of the Shedd Aquarium, and another of my personal favorites, is the dolphins, and the delightful show they put on. It really is amazing. Kids eat this up! Next to the dolphins are the Beluga whales, also fascinating creatures to watch as their massive bodies glide through the water.
I also like the setting of the Aquarium, built right on the edge of Lake Michigan. In fact, when you are watching the dolphin show, the architecture of the building makes it so that you can see (and almost feel like) the dolphin pool is part of the lake. It’s beautiful. And, I like that there are several other city museums close by making it a perfect, easy, fun=filled weekend trip to the big town of Chicago. Mind you, I don’t like the price of the museums, but hey, that’s pretty typical of me.

So, while the tanks may not be as large as the Georgia Aquarium’s, it’s a great place to visit and share your day with some fish!
