Dining on Indiana’s South Coast

You will be impressed by the crisp, Art Deco meets Cinco de Mayo decor at Ernesto’s Tex Mex Grill. Outdoor terrace dining for thirty or so is available, although the summer heat may drive you indoors.
We were greeted immediately, and allowed to browse the menu a moment before deciding whether the restaurant fit our budget. We were pleased to see that the menu ranged from $4.99 for appetizers to between $8.49 and about $14.99 for entrees.
I had the shrimp quesadilla, a very interesting and delicious variation. A good 3/4-pound of grilled shrimp, queso blanco, and sweet Vidalia onions garnished with a side of two cups of shredded lettuce, shredded Monterey jack cheese, and a very large dollop of sour cream had me in ecstasy. My dinner companion ordered a “make your own combo” platter with a taco, enchilada and tamale. The tamales were worthy of my Juarez, Mexico-born sister-in-law’s traditional holiday tamales. Spread onto the cornhusk wrapper was a thick concoction of cornmeal and carne picante. And the roasted chile pepper salsa with fresh tortilla quarters had me begging the waiter for more.
Nearly every table had a beautiful view of Louisville across the Ohio River, and the only jarring note was the honky-tonk music being played on the jukebox competing with the Campesino Mariachi music coming from the speakers above our table. Top off the evening with a walk along the river at Falls of the Ohio, and you have the perfect place to take your date.
