Joe’s OK Bayou

by Meg Smith on 12/05/09 at 8:03 am

I had my first taste of gator meat at Joe’s OK Bayou. Nope, it did not taste like chicken. It was more like very gristly beef or pork.

Dinners come with two entrees, garlic bread, and a main dish. Half orders are available, making the dinners very reasonable and making it possible to try more than one of the various dishes at once without a lot of waste. The atmosphere is homey, with a fireplace going and relaxing murals of bayou scenes on the walls. The music was a bit loud, though, kind of a rockabilly jazz.

The food was excellent. The gator tail dinner consisted of a dozen chunks of meat with a crispy, lightly spiced coating and a dipping dish of honey mustard sauce. The gator was very moist inside the crispy coating, though more gristly than beef would have been. I had the jambalaya and the shrimp etouffe as sides. They were spicy but not blistering hot. The roux gave the etouffe a nice nutty, smoky taste. The rice was just right, neither sticky nor underdone. My dinner companion had the fried crawfish tails with jambalaya and chili. Portions were large enough to have him saying “enough!”
