The Eiteljorg Museum was originally established by the philanthropist and businessman Harrison Eiteljorg (1903-1997). Eiteljorg has an enthusiam for art throughout his life as well as a passion for traveling out west. This personal collection of art turned into one of the biggest Western art collections to date.

In addition to all of the artifacts and vintage Native American artworks, the Eiteljorg is also home to some of the best in Native American contemporary art in the world. In 2005, the museum expanded to include three additional art galleries for contemporary works and additional exhibits, a café for visitors, a Native American education center, and additional event space.

Besides the two new galleries for the contemporary collection, the third newest gallery at the Eiteljorg features the Gund Gallery of Western Art. This gallery holds the collection of traditional western art that was donated to the museum by the family of George Gund.
