Beautiful Natural Bridge in Kentucky

Natural Bridge in Kentucky is up to a million years old.
Beautiful Natural Bridge in Kentucky is located in the Natural Bridge State Resort Park in eastern Kentucky about 50 miles southeast of Lexington.

According to the Kentucky Department of Parks the natural sandstone rock bridge arch is 65 feet high, 78 feet long, 12 feet thick, has a width of 30 feet at its widest and weighs some 900 tons. Geologists estimate the bridge has been around for as long as 1 million years.

The cool thing about this Natural Bridge is that it really looks like a bridge. It has a long flat top surface and looks like a highway bridge. All it’s missing is the highway underneath the arch.

People have been coming to visit the Natural Bridge since at least 1896 when the Lexington and Eastern Railroad opened the area to tourists. The land was donated to the state of Kentucky in 1926 and the Natural Bridge State Park was opened as one of the four original state parks in Kentucky.

Today the state runs the park as a resort complete with Hemlock Lodge where guests can stay overnight. There are also campgrounds and even a Sky Lift that takes visitors to near the top of the bridge.

Also in the park are Overlook Point which offers great views of the bridge and surrounding areas from a distance and Fat Man Squeeze which is a very narrow passage through the rock formation.

Now you are getting close to my neck of the woods, Illinois. Sadly, living in Illinois I never had the chance to visit Kentucky very much. I enjoyed this pictorial journey a lot. Keep them coming my friend!
