New Orleans

New Orleans travel.

1.) Cafe Du Monde.

This New Orleans staple is found on Decatur street right by the French Market.  This Cafe has been featured in many food shows and magazines.  The location is perfect, for a beignet and coffee after shopping the French Market or wandering the French Quarter.  The house special is the beignet which is fried dough covered in powdered sugar. You can enjoy a break from the New Orleans sun, while dining in the open air cafe and listening to the sounds of local artists.

2.) Bourbon Street.

Bourbon Street has a life of its own, and while the crowds and loud music may not be every one’s style,  it is worth taking a walk down.  The drinks in the bars on Bourbon Street can become quite expensive, but don’t worry there are beer vendors everywhere offering more reasonably priced drinks.  The street closes to traffic in the evening and the parties begin.  Yes, it is true, you can buy an alcoholic drink on the street and walk around with it while finding the right bar for you.  And while it can get crazy, there isn’t a lack of police officers and security guards, keeping things in order to the best of their ability.  If after checking Bourbon Street out,  you decide it isn’t your style then head over to Frenchman or Decatur or even royal for a little more mellow atmosphere with just as much music and fun to be found.

3.) Honey Island Swamp Tour

This tour is essential during a visit to the Big Easy.  It is said to be one of the least touched river tours in the country, while most of the area remains in original condition.  This tour will allow you the possibility to see nature and the bayou at its best.  Alligator and other sightings are common, and there has even been a rumored Big Foot sighting from time to time.  This is Louisianans first nature preserve consisting of approximately 70,000 acres of wildlife.

4.) Mothers Restaurant.

There is no excuses for not eating at this restaurant while in New Orleans.  It has been a part of the city since 1938, and has served many famous stars over the years. Some of who you might recognize on by the pictures hanging on the walls.  Mothers withstood Hurricane Katrina with minimal roof and other damages and remains in the same location.

The portions are heaping and the options endless. This is the place to try some down south cooking, or to try an infamous  po’ boy

5.)Haunted New Orleans tour.

New Orleans is said to be the most haunted city in the United States.  After Hurricane Katrina hit and left her ghosts, I believe this city holds more spirits and ghosts than most other places.  The home of voo doo and witchcraft, has secrets and mysteries that only the past can understand.  To get a real feel for New Orleans history I believe this is the way to go.

Although I’m convinced that if you find yourself in New Orleans anytime soon, you will find yourself in fun and unique experiences, I feel that the above stated can help make your vacation complete.  Taking a tour of the lower ninth ward will give you a feel of the destruction left behind by Hurricane Katrina.  If you plan on this tour, please consider spending a day or 2 working with Habitat For Humanity or any other re-building non profit.  You don’t need any construction experience and you will be helping rebuild a city so unique and rich in history, music, and legend, that it will be worth the few hours spent in the hot New Orleans sun and humidity.  Other areas of interest, include Audubon Park, the Aquarium, numerous parades, and Harrah’s Casino.
