The Beautiful Fountains of Kansas City

by Liane Schmidt on 15/06/09 at 4:01 am

Recently, I was told that Kansas City is widely known for it’s beautiful fountains. I hope you enjoy this lovely sample collection as much as I did.

It’s amazing the different ways you can learn about the world. This weekend I had to call Target’s customer service because my ipod wasn’t working and, while waiting on the phone, the lady and I struck up a conversation. She,  was from Kansas City and started to tell me about the great reasons people should visit. In my mind, I pictured big fields of poppies, the Tin Man, you get the picture. Well, she definitely changed my movie themed visions of her homeland.

She told me that Kansas City is well known for its beautiful fountains (she also told me it’s known for the Mafia – so maybe enjoying the city afar from pictures is the best situation for you!). But, I told her I’d definitely look into it because her description was very appealing.

After some research, I discovered that the “Fountain in Country Club Plaza” is home to many beautiful fountains, you will be interested in seeing. Be prepared to take lots of pictures when you go!

Below is a sample of some of the treasures you’ll see! Enjoy!

This magnificent fountain is called “Neptune mFountain” and can be found on 47th street.

This is a lovely Mermaid Fountain. You can find it at The Plaza at Nichols Road and Broadway.

This lovely statue is “Pomona, Goddess of Vineyards and Orchards”. It was created by Donatello Gabbrielli.

This impressive fountain is called the “J.C. Nichols Fountain”. It was created in 1910 by Henri-Léon Gréber. There are four large equestrian figures and are believed to represent the Rhine, the Mississippi, the Volga, and the Seine which are the four great rivers of the world.

So, keep in mind, the next time you pick up the phone or speak to a stranger, realize that it might just be an enriching conversation that leads to your new great article, poem or story idea! There are unending topics you can write about, inspiration is around every corner and bend, you just need to continue to keep your heart and mind open to it!

I love the horse scuptures in the fountains. I did think the statue of Neptune would seem odd in Kansas…

The things you learn even from a distance. I used to live about an hour from Kansas City. Now my sis is about a half hour, and visit her on occasion, but to this day, I have never seen the fountains you speak off, I really feel LEFT OUT :( , But thanks to your research and photos, I feel much better :) , thanks for sharing.

Now see…these are just a few of the things that truck drivers never get to see while out on the road. We come so close but still miss the finer things to see in each city. O’wal…thanks for sharing Liane. They are truly beautiful.

Kansas City is in Missouri. So your impression of “Kansas” is still accurate. I’ve been to Kansas several times and saw a lot of nothing.
Kansas City is a great city. I did not get a chance to visit a lot of these great fountains. I didn’t realize that there was more to see than just the Chiefs and Royals!
Thanks, Liane. A great article with great photos.
