Must Do Hike in British Columbia and Alberta

A List of must do hikes on a vacation to Western Canada.

Even for the inexperienced hiker, many of these hikes can be done with little or no training. Our family hadn’t been hiking for 3 years, and it only took us a 2 weeks to go from 2 mile hikes to a 10.5 mile hike!

The Hikes:

  • Takkaka Falls- A beautiful waterfall during the summer, is only steps away from your car! Fed completely by glacial Melt off, it is the beginning of a hike up to Twin Falls, a long and steep hike. As you climb up the valley, you will pass many smaller waterfalls and a few lakes. I recommend only going to the first few falls. We went to the first lake, 6 miles round trip. If you go all the way to Twin falls it is around 12 miles.
  • Emerald Lake- A Relatively short hike around Emerald lake in Yo-Ho national park, only 3 miles. You can see the Burgess Shale from one side, and the housing from the other. Watch out for Pine Martens when using the pit toilets though!
  • Marble Canyon – not really a hike, but an interesting walk it is! This river carved the canyon through solid dolomite! It is small enough for a squirrel to cross, but still spectacular! Only 1.2 miles.
  • Lake Agnes- A hike that almost everyone knows! Very steep for around 2 miles up to a little tea house around a small lake. I recommend making it a loop of 8.5 miles with the Plain of the Six Glaciers Trail. Using the High-line trail. It is one of the most spectacular view of Lake Louise.
  • Eiffel Lake- a very steep Clim until you are up out of the trees, then it flattens out. Taking you to the end of the valley of the Ten Peaks. Definitely a Day-Hike at around 7.5 miles. Watch out for Bears!
