Camping Review: Elephant Butte, New Mexico

The Land Of Enchantment also has a Lake of Enchantment: Elephant Butte! It is a wonderful State park for boating and fishing.

There is only one way to describe Elephant Butte lake: absolutely beautiful.  The serenity of this lake is enchanting, especially in the evening.  During the day it is robust with boats for fishing (of the extreme type, mainly for stripe base), water skiing and just plain cruising.  The state park has a variety of camping facilities, including full RV hook up, delightful Cabana style tenting (this is really nice as it keeps the sun off of your tent) and primitive camping along the shore line.

There are many bathrooms (both flush and vault) in the area including some shower facilities at the main entrance!

But the most unique feature of this campground is the Adobe style Cabanas used for tenting.  They are easily accessed and the cost is only 10 dollars per night.  All the Cabanas sit high up on a ridge overlooking the lake.

This was the view from our Cabana.

Parking is provided next to each Cabana making it very easy to set up camp.

If you have a large boat you can store it right on the lake!

And it is not just for boating.  The following picture was taken of a family that was tenting next to us and they decided to walk down to the lake for an early evening dip in the warm water.

However, when evening comes, the lake becomes quiet and the soft evening breeze will lull you to sleep.

Happy Trails!
