Camping Review: Tenting in The Riverside Area at Caballo Lake, New Mexico

The Riverside campground is very beautiful. It is large and easily accommodates large family gatherings.

The Riverside campground is just below the dam wall of Caballo Lake Central New Mexico.  It is a large campground with sites for tenting as well as RVs (some RV spots include electrical hookup at an extra cost).  All the sites are well developed and bathroom facilities include flush as well as vault toilets.  The tent sites (10 dollars per night) are situated along the Rio Grande with many of them well shaded by river side trees.

This is the kind of campground that is very suitable for large family gatherings.  Access to the campground is just off of I-25 (exit 59).  The central area has large group areas as well as a children’s playground.

If you’re looking for something a bit more quiet, tenting areas are scattered along the Rio Grande river.  However, caution should be used if you have small children with you as the river flows very rapidly.  Keep in mind that the river experience also means insect experience.  During late August, the flies are out in force however it is not a problem if you plan on eating after dark when the flies go into retreat.

Fishing is just a cast away from your tent site.

Tent sites are well groomed and flat.

Campground bathrooms are excellent ranging from flush toilets at the central area of the campground to vault toilets at the far end of the tent sites.  And the entire campground is peppered with good sized dumpsters.

Dumpster are readily available.

If you’re looking for an easy overnight camp  Riverside is just about perfect.  Because it is a state park, New Mexico State Park Rangers patrol regularly making it a very secure camping experience.   Parking is easy and you can just back up to the tent site.

And of course the entire area is surrounded by the beauty of New Mexico!

Happy Trails!
