Beautiful Taughannock Falls: In NY State and Taller Than Niagara Falls
by Joe Dorish on 27/04/09 at 6:32 am
Highest waterfall east of the Rockies, taller than Niagara and also in New York State.
Taughannock Falls is 215 feet high, which makes it roughly 33 feet higher than Niagara Falls and it is believed that Taughannock Falls is the largest single drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains.

Taughannock Falls is located in Taughannock Falls State Park in Ulysses, New York, in the Finger Lakes region northwest of Ithaca.

Gorge and rim trails offer spectacular views from above the falls and from below at the end of the gorge trail. The falls plunge with such force that the pool below is over 30 feet deep.

The gorge walls are some 400 feet high and carved out by the river. The sheer limestone cliffs the falls go over are jagged and worn, with crackling and pops of falling debris often heard throughout the gorge. People have been injured and killed by the falling debris, sometimes while swimming in the plunge pool.

Taughannock Falls is either named for an invading Delaware Indian chief, Taughannock, who was killed and thrown over the falls by the local Cayuga Indians or the name is derived from the Indian word taghkanic, which means “great fall in the woods”.
Taughannock Falls State Park is located near Cayuga Lake and 50 local wineries in the Finger Lakes region and features hiking and nature trails, tent and trailer sites, cabins, picnic areas, beach swimming, fishing, playground areas, a marina launching site, ice-skating, sledding, cross-country skiing and an annual summer concert series. But the main draw is the falls and the park has a 3/4 mile long trail that leads to excellent views of the falls.

Taughannock Falls are spectacular the year round,

but especially pretty in the fall with the changing colors of the leaves. Taughannock Falls State Park is located on route 89, 8 miles north of Ithaca.

Lovely! This is different from a lot of falls–I like the way it plunges directly into a serene pool.

I grew up 5 miles from Taughannock Falls, and have spent time at the overlook, at the base, and (shh) even standing at the precipice looking over the edge, but I don\’t think I\’ve ever seen it captured so beautifully. Breathtaking photos–making me homesick!
