Cattaraugus County’s enchantress of this mountainous region sculpted her via glacial activity of the Ice Age. With rolling farmlands, vast forests and picturesque waterways as its backdrop, one can enjoy year-round activities that stimulate the senses.

The Allegheny River is respite to the monotony of everyday living. Fishermen, campers, boaters, and the like, seek refuge along its banks and tributaries. As the principal headwater of the Ohio River, portions of this 325 mile waterway meander through Salamanca and Allegany State Park, before making its way back into Pennsylvania.

Traverse Cattaraugus Creek and you will enter the magnificence of Zoar Valley. Forming a major portion of northern boundary of Cattaraugus County, the creek serves as a reminder to enjoy the simple ways of life.

Nestled between the sweeping walls of Zoar Valley’s canyon wayfarers are afforded a preserve for picnicking, sightseeing and much more. Winding its way through the valley is Cattaraugus Creek where fishermen can reel in the catch of the day and the more adventurous can try their hand at white-water rafting.

Take a step back in time and lose yourself amid prehistoric fossils and the geological formations of Rock City Park in the Town of Olean. Come and experience caverns cut by nature into century old rock and climb among the giants of this natural wonder. Geologists and the curious alike will find Rock City a marvel to behold. While on your travels take a short jaunt on the highway to Little Rock City in the Town of Little Valley to experience a more subdued geological wonder.

The sun dappled waters of Rainbow Lake, Lime Lake and Harwood Lake calls forth the mariner in everyone. Whether you enjoy canoeing, kayaking or speed boating, the Lakes in Cattaraugus County will appease your appetite. Don’t forget the beauty of Onoville Marina, where fishing and camping will wash away the stresses of the day.

Dubbed the “Aspen of the East”, Cattaraugus County is home to some of the best ski resorts in New York State. Skiers and snow boarders will find Holiday Valley, Holimont and Allegany State Park filled with chills and thrills to satisfy beginners, pros and everyone in-between. In addition to skiing, Cattaraugus County hails trails for snowmobilers and cross country skiers too. Embrace the snow and enjoy winter recreation.

Whether one travels the main roads or the more relaxed back country roads; motorists will find two thriving cities host to many outdoor concerts as well as well know shops with the latest wares or find the thirteen villages boasting the mom and pop shops of yesteryear. While traveling the “back roads” take a short respite at one of the many natural forest areas. Bikers and hikers, motorists and cyclists will find the 1,336 square miles and thirty-two townships of Cattaraugus County magnificently enchanted.
