Sometimes Mother Nature Can Turn Nasty,

by Betty Carew on 15/02/09 at 9:30 am

A look at some winter weather here in Grates Cove, Newfoundland, Canada.

You have seen the beauty that surrounds us here in Grates Cove, Newfoundland, Canada in the summer but fall and winter brings its own special surprises and even in these there is a form of beauty that can be found. This is the communities Fisherman’s Wharf that took a hit last fall. The winds were extremely high and with high winds come big seas. Everyone that lives here are very accustomed to the change and takes it all in stride, as Vicky Martin our local photographer did when she ventured out to take these pictures. As you can see, even this gives the soul a little excitement.

Winter blankets our community in snow, sometimes quite heavy and some just a brush of snow. On the days that are really snowy you’ll find everyone curled up inside with a good book , well not everyone we do have those that venture out on snowmobiles to enjoy the storm from a different point of view.  Some winters are worse than others when it comes to snowfalls as you can see.

Our grandson visiting from Alberta decided to take advantage of the heavy snowfall we had. He dug a tunnel on the back of our house and slid down through. I think he had a good vacation despite the snowfall or should I say in spite of it.

This is the aftermath of a snowstorm we had in 2005. It gave us lots of snow which the younger ones really enjoyed. The older ones not so much when they had to shovel.

Here is a picture of our little Post office, as you can see there was quite a bit of snow but all we have to do is wait until spring and it disappears again. Not a bad price to pay for the beauty it brings.

This is the downside to a heavy snow storm as men in our community attempt to dig out a car that was completely buried. They will still tell you there’s no other place they would want to live other than Grates Cove.

Regardless of what Mother Nature dishes out we never lose our sense of humor as Vicky can show you after a winters storm.

I totally sympathize. Every now and then, the snow pile gets too high and we have no where to put it!

Bless you dear for sending all those beautiful but chilling photos! I have been trying to adjust to the colder temps here in Oregon, and although today is chilly you just made me feel much warmer…why I might even call it a “heat wave” compared to what you endure. Thanks so much…it is lovely.

You did a great job on the photos. Nature’s balance has indeed been threatened. Now, there’s too much of anything– sun, wind, rain, snow etc.

Hi Yaffel, cracking article once again. Amazing picture of the path up to the house, that is deep snow! I could make some phenominal sculptures with the quality of snow you get; very jealous!
