Ocracoke Island is one of my favorite places to go when you need to get away.  There is just not a place like it.  When you get off the ferry you drive past the pin of wild ponies, that still to this day no one is quite sure how they got there.  The legend is that the spanish brought them over.  No one is really sure but it is one of the more told tales of the Island.  They are many cats and dogs that live there too.  For the most part they have owners that take care of them, but the dogs will bring there ball over for you to throw and the cats will wine and purr for food.  The ducks are also a real treat fro the Island.  They swim around on the sound side and most of the rental houses leave feed in the house so you can feed the ducks daily.  It really is a animal friendly place.

In the mornings when you wake up you can here the seagulls and smell the ocean air.  There is always a breeze and even when it rains you are happy to be in a place this beautiful. There are a lot of fishermen that come to the Island.  Most people that fish, fish for red drum or tuna.  You can also go out your back door and go clamming or get in a kayak and just row the sound.  While I am not a fishermen I do enjoy listing to the stories of what they caught that day.  Somehow every time they tell there story the fish seem to get larger and larger.  The local tackle shop there will always take the picture of the person who had the “catch of day”.  It is quite fun to see who really did catch the biggest fish that day, and I always enjoy when it is a women who did so.

 Ocracoke also has some excellent restaurants.  There is not a lot to choose from but there are a few that give you a good sense of the local color.  For instance, the locals all go to Howard’s Pub it is virtually the only bar that is there.  It is a large restaurant that even in the off season it does not close.  There is also a great coffee shop where you can go and sit outside and just take in the morning sun. 

Ocracoke is a home away from home.  People come to Ocracoke to sit on the beach,  look at he sunset and think if I have died this should be heaven.
