Beautiful Waterfalls of Hocking Hills State Park

by Joe Dorish on 12/06/09 at 4:21 am

The Hocking Hills State Park area is loaded with pretty waterfalls well worth visiting though many of them are seasonal.

Hocking Hills State Park and the beautiful waterfalls in the area are located in Hocking County, Ohio within the Hocking State Forest. The park itself is comprised of six separate areas and these are the most beautiful waterfalls in the areas.

Ash Cave Falls

Ash Cave Falls is an impressive sight as water falls 90 feet over the edge of the 700 foot long, 100 foot deep and 90 foot high Ash Cave. The cave is named for the ashes early settlers found in the cave left behind by the Shawnee Indians who used the cave.

Cedar Falls

The largest and most impressive waterfall in Hocking Hills State Park area is Cedar Falls. It falls 50 feet in total along Queer Creek and splits around a big piece of jutting sandstone around halfway down and then comes together again to create a unique looking waterfall.

Old Man’s Cave

The most popular of the 6 Hocking Hills areas contains a number of waterfalls. The Old Man’s Cave area was named for Richard Rowe, a hermit who lived in the cave back in the early 1800’s. Rowe apparently died from an accidental gunshot wound at age 74 when he banged the butt of his rifle into the creek ice to get to the water below and the rifle discharged killing him. He was buried in the area but exactly where has been lost to time.

Upper Falls

About 15 feet high with some drops right above not included.

Lower Falls

A roughly 25 feet high fall with a nice free fall at the end.

Conkle’s Hollow Falls

Conkle’s Hollow is a gorge up to 200 feet deep and only 100 feet wide in places that contains a number of pretty seasonal waterfalls. Here are two of them with the first one almost looking like a western canyon waterfall.

Whispering Falls

Located along the Queer Creek Gorge between Old Man’s Cave and Cedar Falls along a tributary of Queer Creek is the seasonal 100 foot high Whispering Falls.

Rockbridge Falls

Source

Located just north Hocking Hills State Park in the Rockbridge Nature Preserve is Rockbridge Falls which is seasonal and tumbles under the longest natural bridge in Ohio. The natural bridge is some 40 feet high so that is also the height of Rockbridge Falls. The town of Rockbridge was named for this natural landmark.

There are many more seasonal falls in the Hocking Hills area.
