Don’t Look Back: Brewster, Navarre and Wilmot

Brewster and Wilmot, Ohio are two tiny little villages that have had some growth since the last time I was there. Sunny Slope Orchard, Shearer’s Foods, The Wandle House and Baylor Beach Park combine to make a relaxing day of picnicking, swimming, and outdoor fun.
Brewster and Wilmot, Ohio are two tiny little villages that have had some growth since the last time I was there. Make your first stop at Sunny Slope Orchard and pick up some fresh, juicy pears and apples. Sunny Slope produces a variety of apples, including Jonagolds and Mutsus, which are both slightly tart and good for cooking. They have a strong, pleasant apple smell, unlike the many over-hybridized apples on the market. Mutsus are a large green-yellow apple, cross between the Golden Delicious and the Indo. Jonagolds are a cross of Jonathan and Golden Delicious. They are large red-yellow apples, very crisp and tart. You can also buy a bag of second-pick apples, to make applesauce or apple butter.
The bakery counter features fresh-bakes Italian bread, veggie bread, muffins, pies and pound cake. A deli counter makes Amish-made summer sausage, cheese, cole slaw and other cold salads available for a quick, pickup lunch. Drive along Route 93 to Baylor’s Beach in Navarre, Ohio for a picnic and a swim.
On your way to Baylor’s Beach, pick up some crunchy snacks at Shearer’s Foods, which used to be called Grandma Shearer’s Potato Chips. They sell all kinds of snack foods, salsas, jellies, spreads, crackers, and pretzels. I bought 20-ounce bags of taco chips for a dollar a bag. We tried their salsa, which I thought was very mild.
On your way through Brewster, you will see that the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad line still has a station there. Brewster, Ohio owes a lot of its existence to the railroad. The Wandle House, which was the railroad station for many years, is now a railroad museum. It used to provide rooms and serve meals to railroad employees, and has been restored as a diner.
Baylor Beach Park features “…a 700 seat pavilion, a 90 foot tube slide, an 18 hole miniature golf course, paddleboats, two log rolls, a basketball court, sand volleyball courts, horseshoes, 60 camping sites and a primitive tent area.” Seasonal admissions are available for individuals and families of four, with an additional charge of $25 per each additional member beyond that.
