The Top Three Roller Coasters to Ride Before You Die

by Nelson Doyle on 07/11/08 at 5:48 am

Roller coasters are the backbone of any amusement park and continue to draw huge crowds of adrenaline junkies to its mind-blowing twists, turns and break-neck speeds. Not to mention, the enormous hills and dizzying loops that makes its riders want to hurl up their lunch.

Amusement parks around the world are pulling out all of the stops when it comes to extreme roller coaster design and engineering. The vintage wooden roller coasters are nearly a thing of the past as sleek, new steel roller coasters can deliver an experience near to flying. Wooden coasters does not compare to the steel coasters’ speed, height, cork screw, loop-to-loop track engineering, but one thing that steel coasters cannot deliver as well as wood roller coaster are able to, and that is, it does not make riders feel as if the coaster could collapse at anytime.

There are hundreds of roller coasters located in amusement parks around the world, but only the top three roller coasters to ride before you die are listed on this list. If you have your own suggestions or simply disagree with the roller coasters on this list, then feel free to make your voice known in the comments down below.

Behemoth

The Behemoth located at Canada’s Wonderland theme-park looks like something straight out of a video game. This awesome thrill ride takes its riders on a breathtaking three minutes and ten second heart-pounding adrenaline rush ride of a lifetime. This ride features a 230-foot ascent with 8 terrifying drops, 2 corkscrews loops and reaches 0 to 125km in 3.9 seconds.

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, NJ has something to boast about with its own strata-coaster that towers over its competition at a height of 456 feet tall. The 0-128 mph will cause the feeling of temporary weightlessness as the coaster speeds straight downward at a 270-degree spiral from its 456-foot tower. From this point, the ride takes aim at a 90-degree quarter-turn that shoots the coaster straight down another 270-degree spiral, and then blasts over a 129 foot camel hump that will leave the riders breathless until the end of the ride.

Top Thrill Dragster

At Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio awaits the fastest, highest, and tallest roller coaster in the world (in 2003) called “Top Thrill Dragster”. This amazing steel monster is the first continuous-circuit roller coaster to top 400 feet and at truly break-neck speeds up to 120 mph. This roller coaster will send enough adrenaline coursing through you veins that you just might feel super strong or super sick depending if you have the stomach to handle all of the power that this coaster has packing.

These look fantastic, but far too terrifying for me. I don’t like to be off the ground. A good article.

I think I’ll just stand here and look up at them as great feats of engineering

I know it is not statistically likely, but I think if I rode any of those, it would be the death of me. I’ll just be standing on solid ground with the first three commentators.

Behemoth would kill me. I’d have to already be dead to get on Top Thrill Dragster. And Kingda Ka…I’d rather fight in Afghanistan for 6 months! But I’ll send this to my boys who would love these.

I think the Kingda Ka would scare the *%## out of me. I grew up in Michigan and when we were kids 25 years ago, we would go to Cedar Point and ride the Gemini and the Blue Streak. Lots of fun! Thanks for sharing and bringing back good memories.
Take care,
Chris

Thanks! Enjoyed it, though since my head injury I can’t ride these things, I still enjoy seeing others get a thrill from them.
Thanks,

I love rollercoasters and Kingda Ka is almost certainly a must-do seeing as it is the tallest in the world (though I live in England so it may be a little impractical :p). The others are very similar however and I would not have chosen them as a top three.

 Roller coaster in my country is not as high as like that perhaps.

when I’m old I still would never go on any of those scary rides that make you dizzy and puke. I’m worried I will puke on someone or I will die of fright. I’M SCARED :(

Right before a roller coaster ride, after I’ve paid my ticket, I get the sickest feeling in the world; in the pit of my stomach that lasts until we’re at the top of the first drop…and then we drop. And I want the ride to stop, because it feels so weird inside and this I can’t control. I don’t know why I put myself through this.

The thrill of waiting. The prospect of plummeting to the ground. The loss of control. Zero gravity. The fact that it ends. The experience…oh! I guess I DO know why I put myself through this.

Hi there.

Behemoth is the current signature attraction in my home park and I’m glad its there.

And, judging from the responses of the people on this board, the 3 coasters you listed are probably the ones for them to ride before they die.

However, there are coasters that are far superior to Behemoth (I had really high hopes for that baby… but I can actually conduct a conversation with my riding buddy while riding it: so that should tell you something).

So, for starters, I can tell you that any of the Intamin “Superman: Ride of Steel” coasters are better than Behemoth. The closest one is now called Ride of Steel at Darien Lake in upstate New York. Actually *any* hyper coaster or launch coaster by Intamin is a MUST — Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster are good examples. There is also StormRunner at Hershey Park that is very VERY cool.

And hello!!! How about Millennium Force? Surely Top Thrill Dragster — as much fun as it is — is a short blast next to the extended mind-blowing speed of Millennium Force.

And, if we’re talking about the ultimate coaster experience that must be had before one dies: a person MUST ride the Guiness Book of World Records top bannanna for longest and fastest rollercoaster on the planet: THE BEAST in Cincinatti, Ohio.

The experience of THE BEAST is like nothing else on earth: a coaster that shakes you to the very core of your being.

And finally, one should — nay, one MUST experience X or X2 as it is now called over at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. Its a 4th dimension coaster with no track under or over you. Your feet dangle and the seats rotate 360 degrees. And you don’t know if you’re going forwards or backwards because at some points in the ride, you are facing backwards, then the seat flips and you’re facing forward. Need I say more?

i’ve been on the behemoth. i cried the first time i went on…. and then i went on five more times :) it’s amazing. it’s 87 DEGREES down from the top drop, which personally i didn’t even think was the worst drop.

as for the other two rollercoaters. i’ll keep those in mind.

if anyone ever gets a chance try a rollercoaster which to stand on, that’s a good thrill to :)

ive been on Kingda Ka and top thrill dragster I LOVE THEM!! but NOTHING compares to X2 at Six Flags Magic Mountain, California. X2 will literally make you feel like you’re flying , or dying lol.

I’m not sure if it’s more terrifying or thrilling! and it makes you think you’re going to go through fire!
