Antlers is a small rural town located in southeast Oklahoma, U.S.A. It is home to many deer and deer hunters. Each year the town hosts a Deer Festival and Outdoor Show.
“The Deer Capitol of the World” is the claim of small town Antlers, Oklahoma. For eight years the Deer Festival has brought visitors to town. The local economy gets a little boost and everyone has a great time. An early October event promotes deer hunting as well as an opportunity for everyone to get involved. Local merchants advertise, chances on a hunting cabin are sold with funds going to the local Wildlife Heritage Museum , a chili cooking contest is held, and entertainment is provided by local groups. There are exhibits of trophy deer and all kinds of vendors with supplies to help you get your own big buck.
One year, my husband was the winner of the “Big Buck” contest held by a local merchant. Part of his award was a free mounting of the deer head. Several months had passed since the kill and deer season was far from my mind. My daughter and I came home after a basketball game to a dark house. We opened the door and saw a figure sitting in the recliner. I am not sure if our screams or laughter was the loudest when we seen “Big Boy” the trophy buck’s head in the recliner. Each year we look forward to seeing “Big Boy” displayed at the Deer Festival.

The Deer Festival seems to be a wondeful event. I love chili. I cook a pretty good bowl of chili myself.
