Beautiful Waterfalls of Ricketts Glen State Park

This state park is so beautiful and so loaded with waterfalls it was slated to be a National Park until WW II got in the way.
Ricketts Glen State Park is located along State Route 487, 30 miles north of Bloomsburg and about 45 miles west of Scranton. Contained in the park are 22 named waterfalls cascading through rock-strewn clefts in the ancient hillsides.

The upper park has two deep gorges cut by two branches of Kitchen Creek, Ganoga Glen and Glen Leigh. The two branches meet and then Kitchen Creek carves out Ricketts Glen.

The Falls Trail Loop takes hikers through the upper and lower sections of the gorges and past most of the wild free-flowing waterfalls, each cascading though the rock-strewn clefts.

There are two main types of waterfalls in Ricketts Glen State Park, bridal veil waterfalls

and wedding cake waterfalls like 94 foot high Ganoga Falls.

Many of the trees in the Ricketts Glen Park are over 500 years old and are 100 feet tall. Giant pines, hemlocks and oaks are among the tree types found in the park.

The Ricketts Glen area was approved for a National Park site back in the late 1930’s but WW II ended that plan and in 1942 the Ricketts family began selling the land that would comprise the park to the state of Pennsylvania.

Today Ricketts Glen State Park contains over 13,000 acres of protected land in Luzerne, Sullivan and Columbia counties.

Backpacker Magazine named the 7.2 mile Falls Trail Loop in Ricketts Glen State Park the best hike in Pennsylvania in 2009.

I had no idea there were so many in the park! Cool pics to go with it. Is the state board of tourism paying you for this? They really should be
