Episcopal Church: York Springs, PA

A 1700’s historic church.
The sign says, “This parish was founded in 1746 at Huntington by the Rev Richard Locke to whom the Episcopal Churches in Carlisle and York also owe their founding.” Pictures of churches in both York and Carlisle are shown in this collection. It is interesting to note that Huntington is over a hundred miles west of this point.

I like the sign even though it is not historic. But note the construction. The foundation is stone of two types; the lower ones are field stone from the area. The upper layer is limestone from nearby that has a high iron content – turned red by iron oxide otherwise known as rust.

An impressive wooden cross adorns the area above the door. Let’s face it, without the cross christianity is just another cult.

I sometimes walk around an older building to see how it is made. Note the curved back wall that would produce an alcove like area inside. The roof for that area is copper sheeting which was expensive, easy to shape and very durable. It is likely to be nearly 200 years old. It has a couple dents but otherwise seems to be intact. Two tomb stones can be seen in the foreground.

Interesting article, it appears you enjoy looking at details of structure and such. I like the way you point out such details.
