Iron Bridge Near Mt. Holly Springs

A century old Iron Bridge.
There is a considerable effort in Pennsylvania to preserve the old wooden covered bridges which are generally over 150 years old. This bridge is one of a few in the area which are wrought iron – these were built around 1900. There are several other pictures of these in this collection including one that is about three times the length of this one. It no longer carries automobile traffic. In addition nearly all of the multi-span wrought iron Walnut street bridge in Harrisburg still stands. A couple of spans were destroyed by ice but the eastern end is intact and is used as a foot bridge to City Island.

This iron bridge is now being allowed to deteriorate by Pendot so they can build an expensive replacement. That is how it works to spend our tax money. The bridge is on Mountain Road and connects to PA 174.
This still handles traffic. A truck can be seen exiting the far end of the bridge.
This bridge was erected in 1899 when Phillip Harman, John A Smith, and John Sheaffer were commissioners. Most likely they were commissioners of Cumberland County but the sign on the end of the bridge doesn’t say it. It just gives the date and the names.
