Places to Go: Mckee’s Half Falls

This article is part of the Places To Go series I write. McKee’s Half Falls is a great place to stop while traveling through Pennsylvania, so read this article to find out the why and where.

McKee’s Half Falls is actually a small rest stop beside the Susquahanna River. It is located on Routes 11 and 15 in Snyder County, Pennsylvania. The area is also nestled within the Dutch Country for those of you who enjoy Amish culture.

The setting is very scenic and has nice facilities and places to walk and enjoy. There are multiple picnic areas, some with small pavillions. And the rest stop has restrooms for those traveling through the area. A decent sized grassy area occupies the upper area of the stop, and there is a small beach located down by the river. Steps lead down to the main beach but there are rocks to walk over, so that area is not handicap accessable. And the sandier beach of the two that are there is for those willing to scale down a small embankment. The beaches offer access to the water and are good places for finding small fresh-water clam shells. And the higher area of the rest stop is a great place to view the river and its islands, as well as it’s large rock formations. The view of the falls varies with the water level of the river. They can be seen almost all the time except when the water is exceptionally high.

The photo above is one that I took from the lower beach area. The water was very high that day, so it doesn’t show much of the rapids in the water. But the falls are located slightly up from this area. So if you’re traveling through that area, it is worth your time to stop and spend a few moments. The area does allow pets if you are wondering.
