Porcupine Racing and Five Other Offbeat Things to See in Idaho

From Huge Potatoes to Porcupine racing, Idaho has something for everybody.

Idaho Potato Museum

The Potato Expo Museum is located in “The Potato Capital of the World”,”Blackfoot Idaho. When you pull up to ithe potato museum you will see the “Worlds Largest Styrofoam Potato” out front. Inside you can view the worlds largest potato chip ever made. Its the size of an extra large pizza. You can learn about the history of potatoes, how their grown and many products that use potatos. You can also try potato ice cream and potato fudge. The Idaho Potato Museum has a slogan of “Free Taters For Out Of Staters”.

Birthplace of TV

Rigby Idaho Is The childhood home of Philo Farnsworth. Philo Farsworth was he country boy who invented teleivision. He came up with the origianl plans and showed them to one of his teachers when he was in highschool. Farnsworth got the idea of how to make TV work one day when he was out plowing the fields.

Arco Idaho and the Experimental Breeder Reactor

Arco Idaho was the first city in the world to be powered by atomic energy. The Experimental Breeder Reactor is located about 18 miles from Arco and in in  1951  the world’s first electricity generating nuclear power plant. The The Experimental Breeder Reactor is a National Historic Landmark. you can tour the The Experimental Breeder Reactor during the summer.

 Perrine Bridge BASE Jumping 

The Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls Idaho is 1500 feet long and is 486 tall. The Perrine Bridge spans the canyon that contains the waters of the Snake River. Their is a sidewalk on either side for pedestrians who wish to walk the bridge. You can feel bridge shake when a semi-truck passes by. If you look east from the bridge you can see a dirt mound on the canyon edge. This huge mound of dirt was  Evel Knevels launch site when he attempted to jump the canyon with a rocket powered shuttle.

The Perrine Bridge is popular with BASE jumpers from around the world. The Perrine Bridge is the only bridge in the world where it is legal to BASE jump year round with no permit. During the summer you can see BASE jumpers almost daily. You get a few BASE jumpers in the winter but not many. 

There is even a BASE jumping school located in Twin Falls.
