Barnaby’s Cafe, Houston

A precious, family-friendly cafe in Houston that was inspired by the owner’s childhood friend, an Old English Sheepdog named Barnaby.
Barnaby’s Cafe is a Houstonian establishment for good food and family fun. The colourful cafe was created in honor of Barnaby, the owner’s Old English Sheepdog. Entering the cafe, you can feel the presence of the famous puppy, with a cute border around the restaurant painted with images of Barnaby in different international settings (e.g., Japan, the Arctic, the Sonoran Dessert). It is obvious that Barnaby left a big, positive impression on his owner, just as the cafe has left a cozy and nostalgic impression on me during my time in Houston.

The cuisine has a classic American cafe vibe. Per the menu, good eats include “all natural, hormone-free ground chuck” hamburgers that come with topping options like spinach & feta, green chili cheese, blue cheese & bacon, Texas chili, or Hickory BBQ. Other hot sandwiches include grass-fed Texas buffalo burgers, meatless Garden burgers, grilled turkey burgers, and grilled tuna burgers.
There are also cool sandwiches like the pesto chicken salad with artichoke hearts or the turkey breast with cranberry mayonnaise. Delicious salads include Lebanese chicken fattoush, California salad, or Chinese chicken salad. There yummy sounding warm entrees, too, like spinach & cheese lasagna, Danish baby back ribs with french fries and apples, and a grilled salmon fillet with a side of hearty grain rice & veggies.
Also unique to Barnaby’s is the addition of several recession-inspired offerings. Until the stocks on the Dow reach back to 11,000, the cafe is offering a $1 brownie. It is a little smaller than the usual American-sized brownie, but it is definitely a neat treat that can be shared by a couple with a bite or two for each. The brownie is also served with a topping of vanilla ice cream. In addition to the special economy-sized dessert is a $1 espresso or $2 cappuccino. Both have been lovely treats!
So if any of those food options sound yummy to you, I’d recommend visit Barnaby’s Cafe if you ever find yourself in Houston, TX, USA.

Sounds a lot like some of the places they cover on that show dinners, drive-in, and dives. Some of the best food in America is cooked at some of these out of the way places. Good write. Well done.

Manya: Thanks for the sweet comment. Isn’t it cool that it was named after a childhood puppy friend? That fact sets the relaxed and friendly vibe of Barnaby’s. Just like Barnaby would have liked it : ).
