This past week my husband and I enjoyed a road trip to the Texas Panhandle prepared and armed with spray paint to go visit Cadillac Ranch. This unusual public art named Cadillac Ranch was created in the early 1970s consisting of ten vintage Cadillacs buried nose down facing west at the same angle of the Great Pyramid of Egypt. The Cadillacs have always welcomed graffiti and been repainted many times for special occasions and to provide a fresh surface for future visitors.

Cadillac Ranch sits in a pasture owned by Stanley Marsh 3 a millionaire artist and philanthropist and encourages visitors. To escape the spread of urban growth in Amarillo the Cadillacs were moved in 1997 to their present location. So grab your paint and head west out of Amarillo on I-40 which follows Historic Route 66. On the north service road between exits 60 & 62 you will find a pull over and a gate into the pasture. There is a well worn path to the Cadillacs that many visitors have traveled paint in hand prepared to do their own graffiti. Three other visitors there when we arrived that so graciously took our picture with the cars and we all enjoyed putting our own mark on the Cadillac Ranch. I was a little disappointed that there were many empty spray cans littering the pasture.

I hope Cadillac Ranch continues to delight visitors for many decades to come as we all enjoy the country side of the open road and our love of automobile.
