The Distant Memory: The Baker Hotel

Just 48 miles west of Fort Worth, Texas is a building that you can’t miss on Highway 180; The Baker Hotel in downtown Mineral Wells.

Built in the 1920’s the Baker Hotel had it’s gala grand opening November 22, 1929 in Mineral Wells, Texas. The 14 story, 450 room hotel was once the site of state of the art guest amenities that included a doctors office, beauty salon, exercise room, steam room, mineral baths and massages. There was a private club, a barber shop, drug store and shopping boutiques. Dining and dancing to big band music gave the guests a chance to dress to the nines. The old hotel was a destination for the rich and famous in the 1930’s and early 40’s. Later the hotel became a convention destination, the 1952 Republican State Convention was held at the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas. The Democratic State Convention was also held at the historic Baker Hotel several times.

Big name entertainers Like Lawrence Welk and Herby Kay performed at the Baker. Judy Garland, Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich, Audie Murphy and many other celebrities all came to the Baker Hotel. Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Regan both had stayed at the Baker hotel during the years it was open. The hotel closed in 1960.

Today the best view is from a distance; from this distant view the old hotel is still a proud symbol of a by gone era. From a mile or so away you don’t see the boarded up windows and the decay. The building is for sale but the previous owners and a very lax city government allowed the once beautiful property to fall into dangerous condition, it has been vandalized numerous times and little remains but the memories and old photographs of happier times.

The Baker Hotel price is probably a few million, the possibilities are unlimited. Imagine owning the Baker, the rich history is priceless, the scenic views that surround the town of Mineral Wells are also unique, the old architecture of the Baker is timeless.
