Where Not to Eat in TX City

Restaurant serves the unexpected.

So there is a place called City Cafe that seems to serve an ok cheap lunch special and is open 24 hours.  For about $6.99 it seems that the only thing that is really good is the lunch chicken fried steak with two sides, it will cost you more for dinner.

This place is filled with the many country nick-knacks that one find in such a place as this.  You know the rooster, the chicken coupe near the entrance and a few canoes hanging from the ceiling.  There are a few horses here and there. Surely somewhere in the room there is a horseshoe if I look hard enough.

We never expected the $12.99 shrimp plate to be JUMBO butterfly shrimp, which was a nice surprise for this kind of place.  One would ordinarily expect the frozen small shrimp that you would pan fry at home.  What did make this place even more unexpected was that at the end of the meal, one of my kids looked down and throughout the whole meal was a dead cockroach laying there next to his chair.

Now if you’ve ever been to Texas, you do know that we do everything bigger…even cockroaches!!  This one fortunately was not one of the flying ones. Nonetheless, it was a filthy little creature that had probably made its way from the kitchen and had probably dined on the food we just ate.

Moving on to the public restrooms was even worse.  They were pretty filthy for a restaurant, heck you were even afraid to wash your hands.  But none to our surprise we did find another friend of our table-side dead roach.  Leaves you to wonder if this place cleans the kitchen like they do the restrooms.  Someone once told me they checked the restroom of any eating establishment prior to ordering, it made them feel better if the restroom was well kept.  In their mind it meant the kitchen was good also, maybe they were onto something.

On the way out we told the cashier, all she said was she’ll have to get the exterminator back out here.  Isn’t it great to know this is a recurring problem?
