Back Road to The Southwest

We moved to Alamogordo NM, from Pocatello Idaho this past May 2009. Our travel plan (on a really skimpy budget) included camping along the way. There are some really fun places to visit if you are willing to travel off the beaten path.

Although we lived in Pocatello Idaho (a really great town) our stuff was stored in Brigham City Utah.  Over the years we seemed to acquire a lot of stuff that simply would not fit into our Idaho apartment.  So after loading up in Pocatello, we headed for Brigham City Utah.  An easy trip right down Interstate 15.

One of the most fascinating areas along the way was Big Rock Candy Mountain (U.S. Highway 89: Marysvale, Utah).

Our first camp was at a delightful RV park in Circleville Utah (home of Butch Cassidy).

Next camp was at Lake Powell.  Camping was easy, but it got really hot in mid afternoon and this was only mid May!

If you’re into boating this is definitely the place to be.

We stayed only one night at Powell and drove South to Kaibab Lake.  We always enjoyed this lake and decided to stay three nights at this beautiful Lake.

Kaibab Lake (Just outside of Williams AZ).  Williams is the definition of ‘tourist trap’ so if you travel there be aware that everything is going to cost much more than anywhere else.  The pictures you will find on the net just do not do justice to the beauty of Kaibab Lake.  The following photos were taken over 3 days while camping there.  While the day time temperature was warm, it got damn cold at night (cozy up time in the tent).

I took this next photo in the early morning just at dawn.

The tall pines are really beautiful.

Kaibab was our last camp on our way to Alamogordo.  We cleaned up at a Motel 6 in Socorro New Mexico the next night after Kaibab lake.

Arrival in Alamogordo (Our first day).  Is that one neat sky or what!

It was a fun move.  If you have to move, try camping along the way.  It gives you a chance to slow down and really lessens the frustration of having to relocate.
