Visiting America

The author shares her experiences of the USA.
I go there frequently, as my daughter married an American, and I have three grand daughters. They have lived in a number of different places, California, New York State, Maryland , and now Greensboro.
I usually go in June before the airlines put the prices up to almost double in July. Although our schools do not break up until July, hence the price hike, American children break up in June. It is a very nice time of the year, as the temperature has not reached the maximum, and yet it is sunny and pleasant. I enjoy going to the local open air pool, I also enjoy a game of tennis, and the warm balmy evenings are very pleasant.
Greensboro is a very pleasant area to live, and most people seem to eat out a lot as there are tempting offers, such as the children can eat free. When there are 3 of them, that is a really good deal. There are some nice indoor shopping malls where you can while away your time on a rainy day, and also America still has department stores like Dillards and Sachs, which always attract me. I just love the atmosphere of a quality department store, and have been sad to see some of our great British department stores like Alders and Kennards close in recent years.
Shopping in America is great, clothes, shoes, you name it, are so much cheaper there, and I come home every year with some great bargains. I’m like a kid in a sweet shop, and last year I almost bought up a local shop called ” The Dress Barn.” Not only were the dresses very reasonable, they also had extra discount on them if you bought 2 or more, so I bought 6.
The people in America are very friendly and welcoming to the English. They love us and our accent. My granddaughters always chortle with amusement when I ask where the rubbish bin is. ” You mean garbage Nannie!” They put gas in the car, but I bought them some petrol. The children play in the back yard, but I look out of the window and see them in the garden. They love my quaint English habits, and have agreed with me that it’s very nice to drink tea.
A couple of years ago, they came to stay with me in England, and Ashley, the youngest had started to sound like me. Her Dad joked that. ” We’ll soon get her out of that.” I had to laugh too, as no-one would think they were half English, they have a very strong Southern drawl, which I find enchanting.
Although I enjoy visiting America, I also love to come home. I like to enjoy my own culture, but it’s always nice to experience others.
